Library

The departmental library is a fairly new facility that was established as a separate room in 2005. The library presently has around 825 books related to Biotechnology and allied subjects. It subscribes to three journals and has a computerized cataloging system through which students can readily search and access the books of their need. The library has also been equipped with two internet-enabled computers to help the students to access relevant information from the web including PUBMED.




Computers

The GCGEB provides for almost 1:1 computer access to its students. It has an exclusive students’ computer room having 12 computers (each class has 10 students).This computer room was established with the help of a generous donation of the Calcutta University Alumni Association of North America. Besides every laboratory have two internet-enabled computers [PCs] (one for the faculty and one for the research scholars).

The library has two computers (PC) while the front office, general laboratory and the Head of the Dept. has one PC each. Besides all faculty members and most research scholars have their own laptops (18 laptops). Moreover there are 14 (fourteen) computers that are used with instruments. The GCGEB is the first dept/centre in to be extensively linked through a hi-speedWi-fi connection which enables internet access from anywhere in the centre/dept.




Laboratories

All faculty members of the GCGEB are provided with exclusive lab-space (average lab space per faculty is around 700 sq. ft.) that is fully furnished and air-onditioned. Besides, there is a 750 square feet general laboratory for students that are equipped with the necessary instruments and facilities required for carrying out day to day practical classes.Special laboratories were established with donations from patrons (Shailabala Research Lab, with donation from Dr. Renuka Biswas, USA as well as a tissue culture facility (donation from Prof. Sukhomay Lahiri of USA). There are two tissue culture facility which includes a plant tissue culture facility along with the animal tissue culture facility. Besides there is a huge laboratory space allotted to the students for their practical where they get extensive hands on training.
  



Other Resources

GCGEB offers all the basic facilities of biological research. Apart from that GCGEB initiated efforts to build a centralized Bio-imaging facility with the UCG NCPM grant and procured a Zeiss Meta Laser Scanning .Confocal Micropscope with four lasers (the first in eastern India) as well as a FACS (BD FACSCaliber) and a DNA Sequencer for general use of all researchers of Calcutta University.


The GCGEB periodically arranges academic and experimental workshops at times with the help of international experts and industry to update its students and research scholars with the contemporary knowledge and technical expertise required to remain in global contention.




Enhancement of the learning resources in the last five years:

The GCGEB has taken several measures to improve and enhance its learning resources since its inception. Over the last five years it has introduced several new learning resources and improved preexisting ones. Notable among these are the introduction of Problem-Based learning (PBL) approach in the classrooms, increase in number of visiting faculty lectures, periodic workshops for students and research scholars as well as talks and presentations from accomplished international and national scientists. Moreover it has added a dedicated computer-room for students with 1:1 usage ratio as well as pan department wi-fi coverage including the classrooms.
